Have you ever visited the Home page of a website and thought to yourself, “What is this?” Home pages have one main function and that is to let visitors know why that website exists. So how do they go so haywire?
Too often, businesses and organizations use their Home page as a dumping ground. Upcoming event? Add it to the Home page. Product launch? Put it on the Home page. Press release? Sure, stick that on the Home page too.
What happens is the Home page becomes a cluttered mess of content. Think about your audience. Especially think about a new visitor to your site. This mess of a Home page isn’t going to make the best first impression.
I like to compare it to when someone visits your home or office. You clean up. You make things look nice and tidy. You put things away. You organize.
The same idea applies to the Home page of your website. Of course, it’s easiest for you to add everything to your Home page, but is it easiest for your visitors? If you can’t take the time to prioritize your information, why should they?
Thankfully, just like at home, there are lots of things you can do to your Home page to clean things up. Here are just a few tips:
- Designate a “place” on your site where new things can be added – a blog, a News page, a What’s Happening Now area, a pop-up box or a unique landing page
- Categorize and prioritize information so visitors will quickly and easily be able to find what they’re looking for
- Use your Home page to introduce yourself and to point visitors in the right direction
A well-organized Home page will make a good first impression. Visitors will want to get comfy and stay awhile. Showing them a cluttered and disorganized mess will send them running for the front door.
And of course, if you need help cleaning up your website’s content and copy, we’re here to help.
